There are many successful businesses that make up an established and expanding retail industry in Richmond. The Hilltop Mall, which includes JCPenney, Macy’s, Sears, and other well-known chains; the Hilltop Auto Mall, featuring Ford, Honda, and Toyota dealerships among others; and the Hilltop Plaza, comprising Barnes & Noble, Circuit City, Ross, and a 16-screen Century Theatre Multiplex, are all located in the Richmond Hilltop area.
From chains like PetSmart and Circuit City to big-box retailers like Costco and proprietor-owned businesses large and small, Richmond hosts a variety of retail activity, which should continue and thrive as Richmond’s population grows. In addition to the Richmond Hilltop area, Marina Bay, Point Richmond, Brickyard Cove, and Macdonald Avenue are also attracting increased interest from retail and mixed-use developers.
A prominent example of this trend is the revitalization effort along Macdonald Avenue. Community and Economic Development Agency staff, City planners, and developers are establishing a new “Main Street” along Macdonald Avenue, which will accommodate shops, cafés and restaurants, and residential spaces, bringing new vitality to the area and offering attractive opportunities for businesses. Nearby, the Macdonald 80 Shopping Center will be anchored by a new 140,000-square-foot Target on the site of a former Montgomery Wards.
