Mountain Hardwear, a leading manufacturer of mountaineering and outdoor equipment and clothing, has been a part of the East Bay community since it opened for business in 1993 in Berkeley. It moved to Central Avenue in Richmond a few years later. Earlier this year the company relocated its headquarters to the newly renovated Ford Assembly Plant at the end of Harbour Way South. Recently Montrail, a manufacturer of high performance trail running and hiking footwear and a sister company of Mountain Hardwear, moved into the same location and is now being managed by the Mountain Hardwear team.
The new Mountain Hardwear/Montrail headquarters, right on the Bay Trail and with open air bay views is the perfect setting for the approximately 100 employees who are immersed in the laid back outdoor culture. The company encourages employees to take advantage of the location during breaks by providing loaner bikes and kayaks and showers so they can clean up after their outdoor workouts.
A priority of the company is to reduce its footprint environmentally. Taking part in renovating a historic building rather than building new appealed to that sensibility. Other key sustainable components of the new space include 100% of its annual electrical needs are supplied by on-site solar power and sustainable furnishings and finishes are used throughout. In addition Mountain Hardwear/Montrail encourages green commuting by offering a free shuttle bus for employees that runs every weekday morning and evening from the Ford Plant to the Richmond BART station and the company is working on a green commuter incentive program for its employees.
“We are very excited to remain in Richmond and to be part of this community. It’s a spectacular location for Mountain Hardwear and Montrail and Ford Point provides an ideal working environment for our employees,” said Mike Wallenfels, President of Mountain Hardwear and Montrail.
